The Story Behind Sunshine's
Sunshine's Health Food Store & Vegetarian Deli was founded by Vergis Boujua — known to everyone simply as Sunshine.
But before there was a store, there was a question that changed the course of our family's life.
Where It Began
A Question Worth Asking
Sunshine's grandmother lived with diabetes, and the family watched her decline the way so many families do — one loss at a time, until she was gone.
At her funeral, Sunshine's father turned and said something that didn't make sense at first:
“We need to ask God why people suffer before they die.”
It sounded, at the time, like a question you weren't allowed to ask. It took years to understand what he really meant. He wasn't questioning why we die — he was asking why we have to suffer before we die.
Why so much of the decline that comes before the end feels preventable, if only we knew more, sooner.
Purpose
From Grief to Purpose
That question sent Sunshine's father on a journey of his own — searching, learning, and working to become a healthier, better version of himself.
Along the way, he met Sis. Betty Mohammed, who introduced him to a body cleanse and detox program made by Dr. Paul Goss of New Body Products in Compton, California.
The experience made a powerful impression on him. He felt better, became more intentional about his own health, and wanted to share what he had learned with others.
He felt so good that he couldn't keep it to himself.
What started as one man's personal transformation became a mission.

Community
Taking the Message to the Community
What started as one man's personal transformation became a mission. Sunshine's began hosting workshops anywhere people would gather — the SHAPE Community Center, the Shrine of the Black Madonna, the YMCA — sharing his story and introducing others to the cleanse that had changed his life.
One year, he set up at the National Black Conference in Houston, where more than 10,000 people came through, and he spent all three days there with his iridology machine, meeting people one at a time and pointing them toward better health.
